Global consumer culture set against a local community space built on necessity rather than excess.

Piccadilly Circus is one of London’s most recognisable locations, dominated by large-scale digital advertisements and constant visual stimulation. The space represents global consumer culture, where attention, branding, and excess are central. Photographing this location allowed me to explore how wealth and consumption are openly displayed and normalised in the city’s most visible public spaces.

In contrast, Chrisp Street Market in Poplar reflects a local community space shaped by necessity rather than spectacle. Serving a middle- to low-income area, the market prioritises affordability, daily life, and human interaction over commercial display. By placing these two locations together, I wanted to highlight the divide between London as a global consumer city and London as a place of survival, where different communities experience the city in fundamentally different ways despite sharing the same urban identity.
