Two sides of the same coin, symbolising a single city divided by wealth and opportunity.

This image of a coin serves as the starting point for Two Londons and acts as a visual metaphor for the entire project. A coin has two distinct sides, yet both are part of the same object and hold equal value. This reflects how London exists as one city, while containing vastly different social and economic realities that are often treated as separate or unequal experiences.

By beginning the project with this metaphor, I wanted to establish the idea that wealth and deprivation are not opposing cities, but interconnected parts of the same system. Every diptych that follows is rooted in this concept, presenting two contrasting views of London that cannot exist without one another. The coin sets the tone for the series, encouraging the viewer to consider how opportunity, access, and visibility are distributed across a city that is commonly described as unified and thriving.
